Keweenaw Peninsula, Houghton

The past couple days have been very relaxing. We stayed in a charming airbnb in Calumet, Michigan. There was not much exploring to be done in Calumet itself, but it was a short drive from a lot of wonderful trails, nature, and from Houghton, where we ate all of our meals. This area of the UP is called the Keweenaw Peninsula (see the map below). We also learned that citizens from the UP call themselves Yoopers.

Going North from Calumet, we drove up US-41 to visit Copper Harbor, using the scenic Brockway Mountain Drive to get there. Here are some shots from this scenic trip.

As you can see, we pulled off to the side of the drive a view times to take photos. Kelly and I also hiked a couple trails we discovered along the way. The first trail had dense foliage and was hard to follow, but we’d been in the car awhile and enjoyed it nonetheless. Check out the really tall ferns! Many were waist high.

The second trail had beautiful cliff side views. And contained what we first thought was a series of sculptures called “The Edge”. What do you think they are?

As we continued to hike, we discovered more wooden creations. Some signage helped us realize they were all… mountain bike obstacles. 🙂

Going West from Calumet, we hiked the Black Creek Nature Sanctuary trail. It culminated in a nice beach along Lake Superior, with a river branching off of it.

Going East from Calumet, we visited the Hungarian Falls. Only a short walk from the road, these falls were beautiful!

Going South of Calumet, we visited Houghton! Houghton is close to my heart because I attended the Pine Mountain Music Festival here, at Michigan Tech, as a student performer in 2002. It has been twenty years since I made it back to the area, but it is hard to beat the endearing memories of a beloved camp from childhood.

Houghton has a nice little downtown with a lot of nice food options.

Houghton – College Avenue. Notable meals from Victoria’s Kitchen & The Den.
