Munich

Garett and I decided to spend Christmas in Germany because we wanted to see the famous Christmas markets and because the cold weather is perfect for the holidays. Munich has not disappointed us. The first day we were here, it snowed whilst we were wandering ’round the markets, generally getting us into the Christmas spirit. Check out that huge tree in Marienplatz–it’s real! We checked.

Also, notice the advertisements for Gluhwein–that’s literally “glowing wine” or wine with mulled spices. I tried some and although I really wanted to like it, it was a bit sweet for me. It did warm me up nicely.

A fountain in Marienplatz. I think it would be sort of creepy in any weather, but the ice highlights it nicely.

Look–I got a hat! Clothing purchases for us are a bigger deal than you might think. We have to carry everything we buy around with us everywhere.

The Christmas Market at night. This one is near our place–there are 20-something markets throughout the city. They are committed to Christmas here.

A silly display at a department store. I can’t tell whether the animals are threatening or feeding the bunny. The monkeys look a little hostile, but maybe I’m being speciesist.

We’ve been decorating our place as well. Even with all the markets, I’ve been feeling a little homesick–I think I’ve always been in a school and I’m missing all the fuss that comes with school celebrations. Also, we’re missing our family and friends. Can’t wait to see everyone in January and February.

Here’s Garett buying our lil’ tree! We carried it back ourselves.

And I went around collecting free newspapers so we could make snowflakes to decorate it. Not to brag, but I’m pretty decent at making snowflakes now. πŸ™‚

The final product! We also strung snowflakes around on strings around the apartment.

We will be here until the 27th. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!
