This blog will be mostly pictures of the beautiful places we’ve hiked. It has been wonderful for us, but it makes for less-than-interesting reading. Hopefully I have taken a few good pictures that will convey how lovely it is here.
Garett and I did the 10 mile hike around the lake, Derwent Water, yesterday. A lot of it was flooded–some of the docks were even underwater. The broken stones in the water below are actually a partially submerged sculpture.

There is a famous hand sculpture on one side of the lake.
Garett was really busy with work (and he isn’t in love with Jamie from Outlander), so I trekked up to the Castlerigg Stone Circle by myself a couple days ago. I was hoping to be transported to 18th century Scotland, but I guess I don’t have the right magic. 🙂
This stone circle is 4500 years old! That’s way before the oldest human stories I know. Thousands of years before Odysseus and Achilles. They found some axes here and have some theories, but basically don’t know its purpose.

We also managed to get ourselves into Keswick’s famous Pencil Museum. There were a ton of people there! I can’t believe how many pencil enthusiasts there are. The museum had a scavenger hunt worksheet to do, which is right up my alley, so even with the crowding I was dedicated to reading all the material provided. I finished the homework and got the prize at the end–pencils, of course. Below is the world’s largest pencil.
Today we went up to Latrigg Summit which overlooks the city of Keswick. You can see the lake that we hiked around a few days ago.

Here are some pictures from the summit of Catbells, another fell nearby.

It’s been a lovely week here and a nice change of pace from our tour of cities. For the next two weeks, Garett will be working in Philly and I will be in Southeast Asia visiting my Aunt.
I will try this again…I love Jamie too and wish I could have captured the book by walking to Castlerigg Stone. Maybe the serenity there would help me deal with the piece of a century that I am going through now. Beautiful….Hold on to that when needed.
